Raising Karen’s Children

Coproduction with Kaserne Basel and Dampfzentrale Bern

Raising Karen’s Children tells stories about trust, vulnerability, pain and resentment in the lives of the so-called others. In a dance piece with elements of spoken word, the group developed ideas for an adaptation of “Karen”* into a Swiss context. How can Karen be understood as a symptom of a system that is interwoven with the dynamics between patriarchy, racism and public discipline? Through movement, Company Mek shows different realities and biographies at different stages of life. Starting from the innocence of childhood, a sudden external event interrupts the space and shows its impact on personal and interpersonal relationships.

*If you don’t know Karen: Karen became a meme figure of the black movement in the US, Google her – it’s worth it.

Raising Karen’s Children has been performed:
10.5. – 14.5.23 – Kaserne Basel
11.6. – 13.6.23 – Dampfzentrale Bern

Feedback of the audience

The piece “Raising Karen’s Children” by the MEK company led by choreographer Muhammed Kaltuk particularly impressed us with its harmonious and unusual combination of spoken word and dance performance. Although the ensemble on stage consists of artists who have a dance background on the one hand and a spoken word background on the other, the ensemble forms a lively, balanced organism – with original forms of expression, touching texts and epic sounds. Of the 50 or so pieces we saw in Basel in the 2022-23 season, “Raising Karen’s Children” was one of the most convincing. The Award goes to: Company MEK!” – Die Voyeur*innen Basel
